Abstract

Public commentary on YouTube tends to foreground its shortest and most viral formats, yet a substantial and durable share of attention on the platform flows to long-form video: lectures, explainers, multi-part tutorials, video essays, and recorded conversations that routinely run for tens of minutes. This article asks how the platform’s long-form affordances make such depth possible. Drawing together scholarship on media affordances, platformization, instructional video, parasocial engagement, and cross-cultural circulation, we develop a conceptual model that links specific affordances, including duration capacity, chaptering, playlists, rich descriptions, captions, and layered comment systems, to three depth outcomes: contextual explanation, pedagogical continuity, and community formation. We argue that duration is not merely a container for more content but an enabling condition that reorganizes how explanation is staged, how learning is sequenced across a series, and how audiences accrue attachment over time. We further show that these dynamics travel across linguistic and cultural boundaries through subtitling, translation communities, and the platform’s recommendation and distribution infrastructure. To make the argument legible we present a set of illustrative, synthesized figures and structured tables that organize the mechanisms rather than report new empirical measurements. We close with a research agenda and a statement of the specific viewpoints that our figures and tables are intended to support.
